TRUE HISTORY

DJ TONE

How it all started

The DJ Tone story:

Unknown Track - Unknown Artist

Started back in 1977 when I moved back to Harlem NY. It was during the winter time so it had to be in like November. So I would say, in the Summer of 1978, me, my cousin Greg, DJ Shorts, My Brotha Trip, Mike Black, Marty, Big Doug all went to this block party on 147th Street in Bradhurst Ave, which was called The Dome. It was packed, people all over and this guy was playing music doing some crazy stuff that I never heard before. So I got closer to the stage and noticed he was mixing from 1 turntable to the next and it was HOTT. I was like WOW, this dude is pretty good with what he was doing. It was DJ Starsky. After seeing that I went home and tried doing what this DJ was doing. I didn’t have the equipment so I took my moms stereo and my stereo and hooked it up together by connecting my stereo to the AUX connection in the back of her stereo. I started scratching the records and mixing like this DJ Starsky dude did. I had to put my ear to the needle to listen to when the record would start though. It was amazing and shocking to me of what I was doing. So I remember getting a turntable for Christmas and by the summer time, I got another turntable – Technics SLB1’s belt drive’s lol. I was buying records every time I got money. So I keep going to block party’s, listening to how da street DJ’s was spinning, listening to rappers spit, (Ah yes yes yal, to the beat yal) was the favorite saying, I mean all types of things I got interested in. I remember da DJ’s spinning, GOOD TIME, AINT NO STOPPIN US NOW, TO BE REAL, all types of stuff. Then in 1980, DJ’s & Rappers started putting all of this on wax. The FatBack Band, SugarHill Gang, Funky 4 + 1 more, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious 5, Treachous 3, etc. It was crazy, it was getting BIG. I was doing block parties, events at centers, outside jams, all types of events… and my equipment wasn’t all that high powered. But now, it’s aLL different. I use to consider myself as Da Best DJ around, doing tricks on da Turntables and all, following the things i heard Grandmaster Flash was doing. All you heard about was Grandmaster Flash, until DJ Jazzy Jeff hit da scene with transforming. What I scene dude do was crazy. He’s 1 of da best DJs I’ve ever seen yet and still da best…. So within years, I moved to Upstate Nu Yawk, New Hartford to be exact – Did da club scene from Utica to Rome to Syracuse like crazy. Made a name for myself up here ya heard. aTonyToneProDuctions is now aDJToneProDuctionZ 2013 and current.
